Good afternoon. On a trike there is relatively an equal weight distribution on all 3 wheels which means that about 66% of that weight rests on the front. In a braking event weight is transferred to the front, loading up the front wheels and giving them more traction. This is the same reason that cars have larger brakes on the front wheels than on the rear. Even if the rear wheel isn’t completely locked it can still unsettle the trike if any steering input is applied under heavy braking because there is now less weight and traction on it. Cars can overcome this by using computers to allow the wheels not to slip and keep traction but with only 2 available brake levers on a trike to control 3 wheels it would be difficult to modulate all 3 wheels in an emergency braking situation to not lose control. While yes it would be possible to remove a couple of feet by implementing a rear brake, using the two front rotors for braking has been deemed the safest way to stop our trikes in a very short distance.
